Regina City Council voted to "fluoridate" your water ... but it's not fluoride

In a special meeting on May 2, Regina City Council voted 7-3 to fluoridate your water, but...

▶ It's NOT naturally occurring fluoride

▶ It's NOT pharmaceutical-grade fluoride

It's hydrofluorosilicic acid (HFSA), a by-product of the fertilizer industry classified by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment as an "acute hazardous substance".

Through education, advocacy, and a pending legal challenge, we are building a movement to protect Regina’s water.  We can do it with your support!

Help us stop the addition of hydrofluorosilicic acid (HFSA) into Regina's water supply.

Fluoride Myths Debunked

Myth #1: Fluoride is a nutrient the body needs.

✅ Fact: Fluoride is not an essential nutrient. No biological process in the human body requires it, and no one is "fluoride deficient." You can live a completely healthy life without ever ingesting fluoride.

Myth #2: Fluoride occurs naturally, so adding it is just “topping it up.”

✅ Fact: The fluoride added to municipal water is not naturally occurring calcium fluoride. Regina plans to use Hydrofluorosilicic Acid (HFSA)—an industrial waste byproduct that often contains heavy metals like arsenic, lead, mercury, and radioactive substances.

Myth #3: Fluoride is just like adding vitamins to water.

✅ Fact: Vitamins are essential nutrients. Fluoride is not needed, and fluoridation chemicals are not regulated as dietary supplements or approved as medication for ingestion.

Myth #4: Fluoridated water is safe and approved by Health Canada.

✅ Fact: While Health Canada "supports" fluoridation, the water fluoridation chemicals used are not approved under the Food and Drugs Act. No safety testing, drug licensing, or monitoring of sanitary manufacturing standards exist for these substances.

Myth #5: Fluoride prevents cavities in everyone.

✅ Fact: The most recent high-quality studies show no significant difference in tooth decay between fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities. While topical application of a pharmaceutical-grade fluoride may offer some benefit, dental health is more strongly influenced by diet, income, and access to care than by fluoride exposure.

Myth #6: There’s a safe dose of fluoride for everyone.

✅ Fact: Water fluoridation applies a one-size-fits-all dose, regardless of age, body weight, or health status. Infants, kidney patients, and high-water consumers are especially vulnerable to overexposure.  Even for the healthiest people, there is no known safe dose of fluoride.

Myth #7: Fluoridated water doesn’t affect babies.

✅ Fact: Fluoride crosses both the placenta and blood-brain barrier. Studies link prenatal fluoride exposure to lower IQ scores in children, and ADHD in children who consume formula and foods made with fluoridated water.

Myth #8: There’s no evidence fluoride harms the brain.

✅ Fact: As of 2025, there are 87 human studies linking fluoride exposure to neurotoxicity and lowered IQ. In 2024, a U.S. federal judge ruled that 0.7 mg/L fluoride poses an unreasonable risk to child brain development.

Myth #9: Fluoride is comparable to chlorine in water treatment.

✅ Fact: Chlorine disinfects water to kill bacteria and make it potable. Fluoride is added to treat a non-infectious disease (tooth decay)—turning public water into a form of unmonitored medication.

Myth #10: Fluorosis is only a cosmetic issue.

✅ Fact: Dental fluorosis is a visible sign of fluoride toxicity during early tooth development. The latest CDC data shows over 70% of U.S. teens have fluorosis, far exceeding their own safety target of 10%. Fluoride toxicity can have farther reaching effects, including on the brain, nervous system, endocrine system, including thyroid, kidneys, pineal and other glands, and the bones, causing osteoporosis, etc.

Myth #11: Fluoridation is common worldwide.

✅ Fact: Over 95% of the world does not fluoridate their water. That includes 97% of Europe, 98% of BC, and 99.75% of Quebec, with dental health outcomes equal to or better than in fluoridated regions.

Myth #12: Fluoridation saves money.

✅ Fact: Up to 99% of fluoridated water isn’t consumed—it’s used in toilets, lawns, and industry. Long-term health costs related to fluoride exposure may increase overall healthcare spending, not reduce it.

Myth #13: Governments and agencies have proven it’s safe.

✅ Fact: No toxicology studies have been conducted by Health Canada, CDC, EPA, the provinces, or NSF on the actual chemicals used in fluoridation. Each organization and level of government defers to the others—but none have done the testing.  This has been proven in their responses to Freedom of Information requests.

Myth #14: Fluoridation is just a harmless public health measure.

✅ Fact: Fluoridation violates informed consent, provides no dose control, and lacks medical supervision. It treats a medical condition without diagnosis, prescription, or follow-up—violating standard ethical practices.

Myth #15: Fluoridation chemicals have been fully vetted by government agencies.

✅ Fact: Governments rely on the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) to certify fluoridation chemicals. Yet, the NSF operates without government oversight, holds no legal authority in Canada, and has admitted to not meeting its own toxicology standards under NSF Standard 60. Despite this, federal and provincial agencies—including Health Canada and Saskatchewan's Water Security Agency—continue to rely solely on NSF certification.
